Govt. Wi-fi project

By Yasser Kazmi - Posted on 12 September 2009

The EOI requested by JAKEGA is intended for bidders to Build-own-operate-transfer mode. Why would an ISP give royalty to Government for providing hot spot services in a place like for example like dal lake, pahalgam, etc when the ISP can himself start to offer those services there without any Government involvement.

However, this EOI for public hot spot services is certainly in line with Mercy Corps project of setting up wi-fi in Kashmir for free internet access. We shall explore possibilities ofsubmitting proposal to the Government for setting up free wi-fi hot spots in Kashmir in association with Mercy Corps as discussed in the meeting with Jim White. There we can ask for Government collaboration in terms of either partially funding the project or provide them with low cost of ownership by having them pay only the support and maintainence charges for the same.
